Direct and Indirect in English

    We hope that you're enjoying reading our blog posts. So, now let's know the essential grammar lesson, which is Direct & Indirect speeches. Before we go into depth about this grammar lesson first, we have to learn what is Direct & Indirect speech.

Direct Speech/Narration:

Direct speech is a way to say the speaker's exact words in quotation marks to someone else they have said before.

Example:

Rehan: I can speak English.

Me (saying to someone else): Rehan said, "I can speak English." (Direct Speech)

So, now you have learned about Direct speech. Now we're going to tell you a little bit about Indirect speech.

Indirect Speech/Narration:

Indirect speech is a way to change the speaker's exact words in our own words and then tell someone else with a modified verb.  And we use 'that' instead of quotation marks.

Example:

Rehan said, "I can speak English." (Direct)

Rehan said that he could speak English. (Indirect)
